Discover Standard Concepts For Training a Puppy
A dog’s personality and disposition may be very crucial to his dog training. Your dog may respond better to different training techniques based upon his or her disposition. And of course, some dogs have more difficult personalities and some dogs are just smart and easygoing. But there are some concepts in dog training that work with every dog.
The first concept to be aware of when training a dog is timing. No matter how much we think our dogs have human characteristics, they are not human. They do not understand when we correct them for something after it’s over. You must correct or reinforce behavior immediately. If your dog pooped on the floor an hour ago, it is too late for him to understand any correction now. He’s forgotten all about that and he won’t get why you are scolding him now.
You must be consistent when you are training a dog. Dogs do not comprehend the meaning of “sometimes”. If you do not want your dog to jump on you when you are wearing your nice business suit then you must never let him jump on you when you are wearing your jeans. If you do not want your dog to chew on your beautiful new and expensive pumps you cannot let him to chew on your old ratty tennis shoe. With a dog you must be consistent with everything, every time.
Corrections and praise are both important. Dogs will learn faster and easier when they get love and praise so make sure that you let your dog know when he is doing something right. Sometimes owners tend to do more corrections but praise and corrections are equally important.
You must be authoritative and firm with your dog. When you issue him a command he must obey. If he does not follow through then show him but when you speak he must obey every time. A dog does not understand the idea of “sometimes”.
Training can be fun and you will have more success if you make it fun. You can always add in some games and some playing while you are teaching and your dog is learning. It will be better for both of you.
Be reasonable with your dog. When he clearly understands what you are asking of him he is more likely to comply. If he does not seem to understand you can spend more time with him and split your training up into smaller increments. Work with him and show him the behavior that you want. Use praise and corrections as required.
You are responsible for how well trained your dog is. Any dog can be trained; it is up to the trainer to work with them as necessary.
