Food of the Gods: This is a terrible adaptation of H. G. Wells’ novel. An odd event has caused mammoth expansion in the size of wasps, chickens and rats. Cast includes Marjoe Gortner, Pamela Franklin, Ida Lupino, Jon Cypher, and Ralph Meeker. (88 minutes, 1976)
The Front: Bull’s eye comedy with heavy topic. Allen is a ‘front’ registered by blacklisted authors to set his name on their scripts throughout 1950s communist witchhunt, leading to assorted problems. Alexander’s Ragtime Band: Cheesy however amusing musical chronicling the virtuoso and romantic ups and downs of hot-headed aristocrat bandleader Power, fine gentleman and pianist composer Ameche, and hard but vulnerable singer Faye (in one of her best acting jobs). Cast includes Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, Don Ameche, Ethel Merman, Jack Haley, Jean Hersholt, Helen Westley, Jand ohn Carradine. (105 minutes, 1938)
The Great Moment: Perplexed biography of anesthesia pioneer wavers from comedy to drama. The film is uselessly filled with aggravating flashbacks. Cast includes Joel McCrea, Harry Carey, William Demarest, Franklin Pangborn, Gmdy Sullon, and Louis Jean Heydt. (83 minutes, 1944)
Slaughter in San Francisco: Prior cop Wong desires retribution on killer of his companion. Norris, in an aiding role, is the poor guy. Cast includes Don Wong, Ditch Norris, Sylvia Channing, Robert Jones, and Dan Ivan. (87 minutes, 1981)
Days of Glory: Moving (and illuminating) fable of North African cadets who joined their French brothers in battle throughout WW2 even thougth they were on no account acknowledged as equals. The film is constructed on a time worn recipe of following raw initiates as they become stiffened battle Heros by concentrating on a handful of men and personalizing their tale. This film brings this forgotten chapter of history comes to lucid life. Cast includes Jamel Debbouze, Samy Naceri, Roschdy Zem, Sami Bouajila, Bernard Blancan, Mathieu Simonet, Benoit Giros, Melanie Laurent, and Antoine Chappey. (120 minutes, 2006)
The General Died at Dawn: Fine, altruospheric drama of Oriental enthrall, with mercenary Cooper falling in love with foreign agent Carroll when fighting sinister warlord Tamiroff. Cast includes Gary Cooper, Madeleine Carroll, Akim Tamiroff, Dudley Digges, Porter Chamber, and William Frawley. (97 minutes, 1936)
Barfly: Surprisingly entertaining photograph of L.A. lowlife, and boozy, recklessly macho author Henry Chinaski, played with bravado by Rourke. Dunaway is magnificent as his alcoholic soulmate. Based on the auoobiographical writings of cult top choice Charles Bukowski, who might be noticed on one of the bar stools. Cast includes Mickey Rourke, Faye Dunaway, Alice Krige, Jack Nance, J.c. Quinn, and Frank Stallone. (97 minutes, 1987)
Sudan: Monarch Montez flees wicked prime-minister Zucco with help of Chamber and Bey in vibrant however vacant venture-romance. Montez and Chamber’s last pairing. Cast includes Maria Montez, Jon Chamber, Turhan Bey, Andy Devine, George Zucco, and Robert Warwick. (76 minutes, 1945)
